On a stormy Sunday, in early fall, three weary travelers braved the winding, rain-soaked roads of the Scottish Highlands in a sporty red GTO. With Journey, Boston, and REO Speedwagon on the playlist, they rode the storm out until, at sunset, they rounded a corner to a breathtaking sight: Eilean Donan Castle, its ancient stones glowing in the last light against a dramatic royal blue sky.
One of them, the navigator, braved the lingering rain with her trusty umbrella, stomping through puddles to the castle bridge. She had only five minutes to capture the magic before the light faded into the misty mountains. Then, it was back into the little red car for the long drive to their hotel, passing a tipped-over truck and feeling grateful for their own safe passage.
This painting is born from that passing moment of wonder.
Here, ancient Eilean Donan Castle stands where three great lochs meet, the rugged gateway to the Highlands. Mist clings to the towering mountains one minute, and the next, they glisten in the sun.
A Highland cow, crowned with a wreath of fresh heather, represents the gentle life that flourishes here. A peregrine falcon keeps a watchful eye, a symbol of the wild, untamed spirit of the hills. And grazing in a field of primrose and foxglove are the Valais Blacknose sheep, travelers from afar who look as if they’ve found their perfect home.
Hope is what reigns here.
